This journal is a quiet space inside the Reading Cabin – a place to pause, reflect, and reconnect with your inner compass.

There is a voice that travels with us everywhere, and no one else can hear it. It is there when we wake up, when we face a challenge, and when we lie down at night. Sometimes it sounds like encouragement. Other times, it sounds like judgment.

This week, I have been thinking about the hidden power of that voice. Neuroscience tells us that our inner speech shapes how we plan, how we regulate ourselves, and how we decide what to do next. Yet, for something so influential, we rarely pause to notice it.

I once worked with a professional whose inner dialogue was like a relentless critic. On the outside, he seemed composed, but his internal broadcast was filled with doubt. Together, we worked on turning that voice into something more supportive. Not silent, but strategic.

What I find fascinating is that not everyone even has an inner voice. Some think in images, others in feelings. A small percentage report no inner dialogue at all. This makes me wonder: how much of what we consider “ourselves” is really shaped by the way we think, and the form our thoughts take?

For me, the most important question is this: if someone could hear your inner voice today, would it sound like a critic or a coach?

That is the reflection I invite you to sit with this week. Notice the tone of your inner voice. Notice when it sharpens you, and when it sabotages you. You may not be able to switch it off, but you can certainly choose to reshape the station it is playing.

If you would like to read more about the science behind inner speech and how it affects leadership and identity, I have written a deeper piece on my Substack: Breakthrough Moments

Warmly,
